Program Information Brief

The Heavy Equipment and Transportation Industry is a rapidly growing industry which requires a growing number of qualified technicians especially here,  in the Rio Grande Valley.

In the Heavy Equipment and Transportation Technology Certificate and Associate at Applied Science Degree , you will learn to repair diesel engines, electrical and electronic and hydraulic systems, brakes, suspension, steering, and transmissions. Courses will combine lecture and lab work to include troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures.

The HETT program prepares students for a career in the area of diesel repair. Instruction is in the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and testing of diesel engines, power trains, and components of trucks, construction equipment, and material handling.

Employment opportunities exist in the servicing and repair of equipment such as buses, trucks, forklifts, and construction equipment, etc.


Program Entry Requirements:

Complete an application for admission, satisfy the assessment requirements, and attend any required information or registration session. Students may start any term

Graduation Requirements:

To earn the HETT AAS Degree or Certificate of completion, a student must complete all course work as prescribed and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.


What Kind of Work Will I Do?
  • Diagnose mechanical and functional failures.
  • Remove, repair, and install various components from diesel powered equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Modify existing machinery to improve or adapt from its original design.
  • Make recommendations concerning the repair and maintenance of machinery.
  • Use special and computerized tools and equipment to diagnose the condition of machines, systems, and components.
  • Plan and organize work requested to repair a machine.
What Skills and Abilities Will I Need?
  • Be goal oriented.
  • Be willing to do heavy physical work at times.
  • Be able to follow orders and work well at times.
  • Be able to use mechanical skills and apply theoretical knowledge.
  • Be able to grasp new ideas and concepts rapidly.
  • Be able to read and comprehend technical Information In both print and electronic media.
What Else Should I Consider about this Program or Career choice?
  • There is a minimum investment in tools.
  • Graduates will usually be required to serve 2 or 3 years as on apprentice before attaining journeyman status.
  • You must possess a strong personal commitment to succeed as a technician.
  • Quality graduates will be able to move into management positions in 3-5 years.
  • Average starting salaries typically range from $16,000 to $22,000 per year depending on size, type, and location of repair facility.
